Zelda Wii Title Development 'Well Underway'

Posted December 15, 2009 by David Radd

While the new Legend of Zelda title for the Wii hasn’t appeared as anything more than a screenshot publicly, there’s still intense interest for the title. Speaking to the Official Nintendo Magazine (thanks MCV), Zelda series director Eiji Aonuma confirmed that the development team has already done a good amount of the heavy lifting for the game.

“You may be under the impression that we are still only in the early stages of development – [but] in fact we are well into the making of the game,” said Aonuma. "Our team has been working on making the building blocks regarding the action – the scenarios, dungeon-making and so on. We are well underway.”

“I hope that we can show you something at the E3 show next year and it is something we are hopeful will be surprising,” he added.

Translation: if the the next Zelda game for Wii appears at Nintendo's pre-E3 press conference, expect it to highlight the event.

While this all sounds really nice, I find “... and it is something we are hopeful will be surprising” a bit eerie considering Nintendo has proclaimed The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks a title they want to work with towards the casual gamers. Dealing with trains, a rather cute visual design and not too hard puzzles and challenges, Link's most recent escapades have made some purists a bit uncomfortable. Though rich in quality and detail, the two most recent additions in The Legend of Zelda series have not made a great impact, so to speak.
