XCOM 'Re-Imagining' Actually Being Developed at 2K Australia

Posted April 15, 2010 by James Brightman

Update: 2K Games issued us this clarification: "2K Marin, both the Novato, California and Canberra, Australia arms of the studio, are collaborating on XCOM. The two function as sister studios now and the 2K Australia name is no longer used."

Original Story:

This week we reported that 2K Marin is working on a "re-imagining" of the classic XCOM franchise. As it turns out, that's only a half-truth. Publisher 2K Games conveniently left out the fact that 2K Australia is really the team that is handling the title's development, 1UP learned.

That means that the core group who worked on BioShock 2 will not be working on XCOM, but 2K Australia, which 2K says is a "sister studio" to 2K Marin, did actually help co-develop BioShock 2, so it's not like gamers need be worried. 2K explained that 2K Australia is now essentially part of 2K Marin - the company labeled it "the Canberra, Australia arm of 2K Marin."

The new XCOM is being designed as a first-person shooter for PC and Xbox 360. 2K said in its original announcement that the game "combines the strategic core of the groundbreaking franchise with a suspense-filled narrative and distills it into a tense and unique first-person shooter experience." No release date has been set.
