Xbox Voice Chat Quality to be Improved, says Microsoft

Posted August 27, 2010 by Ben Strauss

Though the Xbox 360 Pro and Elite models include headsets that allow for online chat between players, voice quality unfortunately has always been substandard. Microsoft aims to change that with an update planned for later this year.

In line with Kinect’s tech, the upgrade will improve the codec and audio infrastructure that connects Xbox chat facilities with the rest of online capable devices. Xbox Live Studio’s Jerry Johnson says that the update should make online chat cleaner and crisper when gamers are talking to one another online.

"The codec we used when we first launched was a low bit rate codec and we stuck with that," Johnson said at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival, reports Eurogamer.

Though broadband was required at launch, a 64k connection was implemented, one that the chat service was tailored to use.

"It's time for us to move on. Especially if we want to think about broadening - a crackly headset on the top of your head – not what people think of when they talk about popular entertainment," Johnson said.
