Xbox Successor Could Deny Used Games from Playing, Launch Kinect 2 – Rumor

Posted January 25, 2012 by Ben Strauss

New rumors have started popping up about the next generation Xbox that is expected to be unveiled in the next two years.  The new console will be making a drastic change in format, opting to run Blu-Ray, rather than the current DVD format used on the Xbox 360.  While that news is certainly interesting, perhaps more astonishing is the fact that the new console might be able to detect, and deny, used games.

Essentially, the new Xbox will be able to detect if a game is pre-owned, and choose to ensure some kind of online pass is paid for, or even deny the disc from being run in any capacity.

Other big rumors pertain to the next Kinect, which has already been hinted at as being rather powerful.  The new console and Kinect would be unveiled at the same time, it appears.  New features would include an on-board processor as well as enhanced motion tracking capabilities.

Earlier news already pinged the new System on a Chip being used for the console as being called the Oban Chip and more speculation continues to abound that a reveal could be due in for E3, if not by the end of the year.

Microsoft has emailed Kotaku pertaining to the news, saying that “As an innovator we're always thinking about what is next and how we can push the boundaries of technology like we did with Kinect. We believe the key to extending the lifespan of a console is not just about the console hardware, but about the games and entertainment experiences being delivered to consumers. Beyond that we don't comment on rumors or speculation."
