Xbox Live Users Rewarded

After teasing the idea a couple weeks ago, today Microsoft announced a new pilot program for Xbox Live called "Reward Central." As indicated on the official website, purchases like Xbox Live Gold Memberships and Netflix subscriptions along with participation in consumer surveys will net users Microsoft Points.

"For the next six months, the Rewards Squad will hook you up with Microsoft Points just for doing the stuff Xbox Live members do all the time," reads the website. "You’ll score points not only for renewing your Gold subscriptions; you’ll get a reward on what you spend on the Xbox Live Marketplace. The best part is, the more you spend, the more you get, and for each month you stay on Gold, the higher your monthly reward up to 5% of your Marketplace spend."

This program sounds like an incentive for users to continue to pay for Xbox Live instead of using its main competitor, the PS3's subscription free PlayStation Network. Microsoft hasn't given prizes for users racking up Xbox Live Achievement points since their abortive Xbox Rewards program in 2007; we suppose the Achievement points are a reward in and of themselves.
