Xbox Live Adds a Member Every Two Seconds, says Microsoft Exec

Posted November 11, 2011 by David Radd

According to Xbox Live head of marketing Robin Burrowes, all entertainment will be interactive within the next five years. Furthermore, he notes that in a decade of building up Xbox Live, the service now adds a new member every two seconds.

Xbox Live launched with about 50,000 users in 2002, eventually reaching 35 million by the end of last year. The launch of Sky Player in Europe, Facebook and Twitter on Xbox Live in 2009, along with the phenomenal Modern Warfare 2, meant that the user-base doubled to 20 million from the previous year, and Kinect in 2010 helped add another 15 million.

“We know already that users are resonating with the fact that the games console goes beyond its usual remit,” Burrowes said according to Develop.

Burrowes also said that over 75 percent of European console owners watch DVDs or Blu-ray movies on their consoles, while 72 percent download content. Meanwhile, 42 percent of people use social networks, chat and e-mail to talk with contacts while watching a TV program or video.
