Xbox 360's Natal to Cost $149, Ships This October, says Source

Posted May 26, 2010 by Ben Strauss

A "trusted source" has confirmed to Edge that the Natal camera set will cost $149, and will also be bundled with the Xbox 360 Arcade at $299. Though that price has been posted for the United States, prices in other markets will vary depending on a number of factors, including exchange rates.

The source also stated that Natal is scheduled for worldwide release on October 26, but it is subject to change by a few weeks give or take, depending on a multitude of factors. This estimate falls in line with an earlier tip, even though Microsoft vehemently denied the claim.

There was also a confirmation that the device would not be named the Natal, as the proper title will be revealed at E3 later next month. The device is of course directed at the casual and family gaming markets.

“Microsoft expects to sell millions and millions of Natal units in its first year on the market so you can expect the software launch line-up to target non-traditional gamers,” the source said. “A major marketing campaign will also play a key role in attracting and educating the expanded audience about Xbox 360’s controller-free revolution.”

This announcement comes as a surprise, as it will be potentially be priced higher than rival Sony’s Move system, which has been announced at less than $100, and will include a game. This pricing estimate is much higher than analyst estimates, and could mean trouble for Microsoft.

Though Microsoft is confident that Natal will be a major hit, consumers will have to decide in October if they want to pay the extra price for games centered more on family experiences, rather than hardcore gameplay.
