Following the spotlight on motion controls at this year's E3, Ipsos OTX decided to take a look at consumers' attitudes towards the PlayStation Move and Kinect. It would seem that both motion platforms gained some slight traction from E3, with Microsoft's Kinect benefiting a slight bit more.

Interestingly, it would seem that Sony is doing a better job appealing to its core PS3 gamer base, than Microsoft is with respect to Kinect and the core Xbox 360 gamer. This is no doubt deliberate, as Microsoft desperately wants to expand its audience to attract more of the Wii-style players. "Games like Kinectimals and Kinect Sports are unlikely to send existing Xbox 360 owners into a frenzy," said Nick Williams, Director Gaming Insights for Ipsos OTX MediaCT, but he warned, "the price point might be a stretch for the casual outsiders."
Williams continued, "There were also some noticeable shifts in audience composition from May to June. Following the announcements and demos at E3, it appears that interest for Move is solidifying among the existing PS3 base. Prior to E3, only 75% of Move intenders claimed to own a PS3, but that number has increased to 88%. This shift suggests that the game content shown at E3 is resonating with a higher ratio of core PS3 gamers. This is supported by the change in Wii ownership among Move intenders, from 69% pre-E3 to 54% post-E3. The opposite trend is occurring among Kinect intenders, where the Xbox 360 ownership among them has dropped from 94% to 89%. This data suggests that Kinect may slowly be gaining appeal among non-360 gamers, although it is still too early to make any final conclusions."

nice numbers.....of course nearly 90% of ps3 owners will buy it, thats a given....now the 360 owners we are on the fence in a way only because of the hardcore crowd but I think it will smooth itself out down the line with Kinect. there are rumors that Capcom may do a Streetfighter for kinect down the line I'm sure the hardcore will love it ...but I'm more into what Nintendo is gonna do, seeing that they might just lose at least 20-25% of the marketshare in the next two years to Sony and MS respectively, will this force their hand to bring out a new console?

I think that if you put a bunch of casual/non-gamers in a room with both Kinect and Move--the majority of them would probably be more impressed by Kinect. This is of course do to the fact that you can control connect with either simple hand gestures or voice commands. It also confirms that we are getting that much closer to the future all those 80's and 90's sci-fi movies told us we would eventually get to.
However, this doesn't mean that those same impressed casual/non-gamers would rush out to grab Kinect over the Move. It just means that upon initial experience(playing games with a Wii-like wand or playing them with no controller at all) they'd probably make the Kinect controller the preferred watercooler topic.

Kinect has the sexy factor of offering things that haven't quite been seen before - whether that will be enough to get people to pony up (probably) $149 remains to be seen.

Those are not "This will save our Q4 sales!" type numbers. I think consumers will be slow to pick up these units unless there's compelling, gotta-have software for it. Nintendo did this successfully with previous hardware add-ons, using Starfox and Donkey Kong titles to gain impressive penetration of the installed base. Sony and Microsoft seem to be trying not to use this tactic, and I don't know why. Even a very vaguely Halo-associated title would sure spark a lot more interest in Kinect... unless the hardware creates such lag any kind of Halo title isn't practical.

To be fair, for the target demographic of the casual gamer of Microsoft, the price is not just Kinect but also the price of an XBox360 and a game. (ie something in the neighborhood of 199+150+50*)(assumes $50 price for Kinect games) so the true price is 399 for the arcade with Kinect or 499 for the HD Based system.
That is a much tougher sell than the $99 for the Move Starter pack(+$40 for Move specific games other than Sports Champions) I believe Sony is targeting existing PS3 owners as the data above suggests.
As we all know from Government Tax Withholding (at least in the US) and the wireless phone, it is much easier to get someone to pay smaller ongoing payments (Move like approach) then the larger initial purchase (Kinect).
Of course this could all change if Microsoft comes out between now and November and adds core title support to Kinect or decides to take a big loss on the product (price it lower than $100 and throw in their best game).
One good thing is that we will get to compare the results separately as Sony is launching Move earlier in September so we will have sales results even before Kinect arrives and then after Kinect launches.
