Xbox 360's Alan Wake is Remedy's Big Bet

Posted February 18, 2010 by David Radd

While Remedy Entertainment is best known for the Max Payne series, the last game the company released was Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne in 2003; that's ages ago in video game terms. While the Finnish company made a small fortune when it sold the Max Payne rights to Take-Two, that was also several years ago, and the developer indicates that it needs the revenue from Alan Wake (releasing May 18, 2010) now more than ever.

"To be honest, we're very much betting the farm on this game," said Remedy managing director Matias Myllyrinne to IncGamers. "We've created it since 2005, and it is kind of like landing on a new continent and bringing the ships - 'Guys, you'd better make do on this continent. Survive.' So Alan Wake is something that we've poured our hearts and souls into."

While we're sure that Remedy would rather put their fate in the hands of a game releasing on both PC and Xbox 360, it simply wasn't their choice. Microsoft recently confirmed Alan Wake's status as an Xbox 360 exclusive, saying in part, “We ultimately realized that the most compelling way to experience Alan Wake was on the Xbox 360 platform, so we focused on making it an Xbox 360 exclusive.”

So this is their "Final Fantasy" game huh. I honestly hope that this game and Heavy Rain for the PS3 do very well. I don't think either one will be a blockbuster but I feel they both deserve to be. I think we need more fresh gaming expereinces like these to keep things from being sequel after sequel year after year.
