Xbox 360 Sells 1 Million Down Under

Posted April 19, 2010 by James Brightman

While Australia and its gamers are still dealing with a terribly outmoded game ratings system (which hopefully can be fixed by the new Attorney General), the country is starting to amass a sizable base of Xbox 360 gamers. Microsoft today announced that a million Xbox 360 units have been sold across Australia and New Zealand.

Unfortunately, an exact breakdown between Australia and New Zealand was not provided. It seems, however, that the vast bulk of the installed base is in Australia. Back in June, Microsoft revealed its figures by country and said that 630,000 Xbox 360s had been sold in Australia and 80,000 in New Zealand. Nintendo reached the 1 million sales mark with the Wii in Australia well over a year ago, while Sony revealed earlier this year that 770,000 PS3s had been sold down under, which slightly trailed Xbox 360 at the time.

Australia's gaming market is definitely on the up and up. In 2009, the industry set a new high watermark with over $2 billion (Australian dollars) in sales.
