Nintendo's Wii, once at the top of the heap, is now finding itself struggling to keep up with the HD competition. According to Cowen and Company analyst Doug Creutz, as reported by sister site GamesIndustry.biz, Microsoft's console is about to outsell the Wii for the first time this console cycle on a trailing 12-month basis (TTM).
"This illustrates the significant shift that has gone on over the last year in the console space," Creutz told investors. "The Wii was outselling the 360 and PlayStation 3 combined on a TTM basis as recently as January 2010, and was outselling the 360 alone by 2:1 on a TTM basis in December 2009 and 1.5:1 in October 2010.
"Over the last three years, TTM total U.S. Xbox 360/PlayStation 3/Wii hardware unit sales have remained relatively consistent in the 17-19 million unit range (18.2 million as of February), so this does represent a share shift as opposed to just a decline for the Wii."
Creutz added, "We believe the significant shift in hardware sales towards HD consoles is a positive ongoing development for the US publishers, who earn the majority of their sales on the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3."

Ok I'm really confused right now! The 360 started to out sale the Wii in June. During March 10 to May 10 the Wii sold 1,169,100 million to 360 718,400.
March 2010
Wii – 557.5K
Xbox 360 – 338.4K
April 2010
Wii – 557.5K
Xbox 360 – 338.4K
May 2010
Wii - 334.8K
Xbox 360 - 194.6K
Not sure what this trailing twelve-month (TTM) term means, but it seems it's pick and choose your months. March 10 to March 11! The 360 did not constantly out sell the Wii for 12 months. Also what about last December the Wii out sold the 360 on that as well. Even with what happen last year the Wii was still the best selling home console for the year. So please someone explain what this so called analysts are trying to say.

Its not pick and choose your months, it's all 12 months. Yes the Wii was doing much better in March 2010 but as those units sold drop off and are replaced with this years sales numbers things start to look very differently.

It's the opposite of pick, and chose! You add every months sales up for Wii to make a total. You add every months sales up for xbox360 to make a total. Then you compare who has the biggest sales TOTAL number. Or you divide the totals by 12, and compare the resulting average. The point of the TTM is to NOT pick and chose, it will cause you ignore the companies picking and choosing and declaring they are a winner!
If my team beats your team 10 times in a 12 game challenge by a average of 30 points, and you beat mine twice by 1 point each time each time. You would be picking, and choosing if you bragged about your victories. But if you just add all game points up, and divide by twelve and then compare the average scores you would see that you got pwned! Repeatedly and lustfully!

also I noticed you don't have the big months? During the Christmas season is where the big sales happen. You should have 12 months if you ignore the big ones you would be picking and choosing. Also I'm not sure if your comparing apples and oranges. For instance are they all NPD numbers, Sony admitted using shipped number once again, while Microsoft uses sold to people numbers.

now if only Micosoft can do that 3 more years and nintendo just stops selling consoles all toggether worldwide then 360 will catch up...pffftttt
