Xbox 360 is 'Fully 3D Capable,' says Microsoft

While Sony, as a consumer electronics firm, is pushing 3D hard with its own TVs and 3D gaming on the PS3, Microsoft has been taking a more cautious approach. Xbox Director of Product Management Aaron Greenberg previously downplayed the impact 3D would have on the living room, but he took a step back today just to make sure that Microsoft isn't putting out the wrong marketing message. Greenberg stressed to G4tv that Xbox 360 is indeed "fully 3D capable."

"From the technical standpoint, we are fully 3D capable. We have 3D games running today," he told G4tv last week at CES. Nevertheless, Microsoft remains skeptical about just how important the 3D movement will be to consumers.

"As consumer interest for 3D grows, we'll grow with it," Greenberg continued. "I think right now we're unsure what level of interest there is from consumers to really want a 3D experience in the living room. Many, many years from now when it becomes a reality, we absolutely can support it, we do support it today. If developers want to make more 3D games, they can."

Microsoft may be sort of sitting on the sidelines when it comes to 3D, but the company's big focus right now is its own Project Natal motion control platform, and you can expect corporate messaging to reflect that.
