World of Warcraft Wracked By Cataclysm

Posted August 21, 2009 by David Radd

Blizzard Entertainment today officially announced the third expansion for World of Warcraft at BlizzCon. As rumored, the expansion pack will be titled World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, adding changes not just for veteran players, but also for new characters as well.

"In addition to revitalizing some of the most familiar and iconic areas of the game world, this third World of Warcraft expansion will add new features and a large amount of new content for players to explore," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We're excited to be offering a first glimpse of Cataclysm for attendees of BlizzCon, and we look forward to sharing more information with everyone as development progresses."

"I laugh in the face of danger! HA HA HA HA HA!"

The story of Cataclysm centers around the awakened Dragon Aspect Deathwing who wreaks havoc on the world of Azeroth, shattering continents and leading to events that reshape both the Horde and Alliance. Two new playable races were also confirmed: the crafty and mischievous Goblins for the horde and the werewolf-like Worgen for the Alliance. The level cap of the game has also been raised from 80 to 85, with new areas and raids for players to advance their characters.

Other changes include new lower level quests and zones for players to explore. Flying mounts are now useable in Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms, while guilds can now advance with levels and achievements. Archaeology has been added as a secondary profession, and while no new classes have been added, new race/class combinations will be made available.

The previous expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, sold more than 2.8 million copies within its first 24 hours of availability and more than 4 million copies in its first month. Cataclysm is expected to ship sometime in 2010.
