According to Nielsen’s Top 10 PC Titles for June 2011 list, Linden Labs’ Second Life has fallen on hard times. The game, which was number 9 on the May 2011 list, has now dropped out of the Top 10 and currently sits at number 11. The list sorts the titles by the amount of time consumers spent playing each game per week.
Unsurprisingly, World of Warcraft led the list with 423 minutes played on average per week. Surprsingly, Warcraft III sits at number two with 389 minutes on average. The rest of the list is below.
The Nielsen List
Second Life’s share – the percentage of the total gaming audience that plays the game – also saw a large drop from May to June 2011. In May, its share was .814, but for June that number was almost halved, ending at .539.
Overall, it’s notable that the list doesn’t sport a huge number of new titles. League of Legends sits as the newest title on the list, having come out in October of 2009, while Warcraft III stretches all the way back to 2003. New IP and gametypes are also absent, with the list being comprised mostly of sequels or classic titles. League of Legends, one of the few new games, is based on a Warcraft III mod.
Services like Steam mean new titles are reaching PC gamers all the time, but are they choosing to stick with the tried and true?
