A new job posting at Sony Liverpool is looking for developers to deliver “the most realistic, intense, action-packed game experience available.” The developer, well known for its experience in racing games, could very well be heading in a new direction with the job posting.
The job requires applicants to have an “encyclopedic knowledge of games, especially 3rd/1st person action.”
The job posting is a major turnaround from earlier reports of game cancellations and suspected layoffs following a merger with Evolution Studios back in January 2010.
The studio, famous for developing the popular WipEout series, recently commemorated the 15th anniversary of the franchise with a party in PlayStation Home.

What's the disconnect at Sony about the value of Wipeout as a game IP? It was one of the franchises that helped make PS1 mainstream. WO Pure helped drive a boatload of PSP sales at launch. WO HD managed healthy sales for what amounted to a PS3 tech demo. Instead of a full-blown Wipeout for PS3 to make sure this franchise keeps its value, we get an announcement that the talented studio behind it is working on who knows what. Wake up and smell the opportunity, SCEA -or better yet, take a page out of Nintendo's book on game IP management.
