Will Wright has remained pretty tight lipped about what exactly he's working on at his new Stupid Fun Club studio, only occasionally dropping hints here and there. In a new interview over at VentureBeat, he reveals that he's got three different projects in the works currently.
"Right now we are pursuing three pretty aggressively. We might get up to four or five. I want to stay pretty focused. We have a lot of ideas that we want to do. But it’s just three now," he said.
Electronic Arts, which is a minority investor in Stupid Fun Club, would have first rights to any video game ideas, but at this point it's not 100% clear if Wright's projects would necessitate EA's involvement. Similar to Jordan Weisman, it seems Wright is looking to blur the lines between the game industry and toy industry, and he sees the web as the "connective tissue." In fact, he acknowledges that he spoke with Weisman early on: "We talked with Jordan Weisman before we structured this. Jordan is a great guy and he is pursuing something broadly similar in terms of cross-media entertainment."
Wright elaborated a little more on his current projects: "One of them is toy related. The others aren’t. We are looking at a lot of different industries. There’s the web. Toys. We’re not restricted to one type of entertainment. We’re kind of looking for ideas that cross a lot of different boundaries."
Although Wright is no longer focusing strictly on video games, he does not feel he's abandoning the game industry at all. "I feel we are still in it because a couple of projects are games," he said. "We are taking the games industry into other areas. We are expanding what we call the 'play industry.' Games are limited in some ways. Play can be applied to so many different kinds of experiences."
Wright will be speaking next February at the Toy Fair, so hopefully we'll hear about some announcements are get some more details by then.
