IndieCade, the only independent gaming event open to the public, starts tonight (October 1) in Culver City, California. 30 independent games will be selected from hundreds of entries. Hands-on exhibitions of the top 30 finalists’ work will be showcased through October 4 at Wonderful World of Art Gallery, Culver Hotel Mezzanine and Gregg Fleishman Gallery from 10:00am to 7:00pm daily.
The show also features a conference track featuring artist talks, salon discussions, master classes, workshops, panels and keynotes. Of particular interest should be Will Wright's keynote on Saturday. The legendary designer behind Sims and Spore will talk about his new venture, Stupid Fun Club (you can also read our interview with Wright about Stupid Fun Club here). Other important keynotes include Keita Takahashi (Katamari Damacy) and Jenova Chen (Cloud, Flow and Flower) who will have a conversation with moderator Robin Hunicke about “Fresh Ideas for First and Third-Person Shooters.” These will take place on Friday.
Finally, on Sunday the event will "focus on opportunities for aspiring young gamers, including a special workshop on colleges and universities that offer degrees in gaming, and a special pitch session where young designers can get feedback on their game ideas, as well as a series of sessions dedicated to adults interested in entering the game industry."
