Wii Version of Prince of Persia to Feature 'Impressive Graphics'

Posted February 16, 2010 by James Brightman

The last Prince of Persia featured an unique cel-shading style and player-friendly gameplay approach that one would think would fit perfectly with the Wii audience. Producer Ben Mattes told us last year that he would have loved to bring the experience to Wii players. Now at least for the upcoming title The Forgotten Sands, Wii owners won't be left out.

Ubisoft today shed some light on the Wii version, promising "impressive graphics" that take "full advantage" of the Wii's capabilities, and an experience built from the ground-up for Nintendo's console. "The Forgotten Sands utilizes advanced technologies to deliver a smooth, clear and impressive graphical experience on Wii. With 15 hours of original storyline as well as alternate paths, secret areas and unlockables, The Forgotten Sands provides players with a significant adventure that rewards exploration and encourages replay ability," said Ubisoft.

Like the upcoming movie from Jerry Bruckheimer, The Forgotten Sands takes place within the Sands of Time universe (unlike the last game). The game is slated to ship May 18, 2010, which is just 10 days before the movie hits theaters. Check out these two new screenshots from the Wii game:

These screens have obviously been highly manipulated, if they were ever real devkit caps. Of course they are in a resolution much higher than a wii can display. But there are some other oddities like antialiasing on the characters (but not other surfaces) that make me think that these are actually composites generated in photoshop. Note also the very photoshop-like highlight on the spinning blade.

Good points ElGancho. I'm not an expert in photoshop or screenshot manipulation, but I definitely agree that these shots look like a much higher res than Wii can produce.

Only Ubisoft knows 100% for sure how genuine these screenshots are, but I'd guess that they used game assets and “posed” things so it that looks better than the game does.

its Downscaled...these images were originally rendered in 720p resolution then downscled to 480p. giving it a crisp clean look that normally wouldnt be capable if originally rendered in 480p....If thats the process used with the actual game development then they will come close to these visuals..but only with component cables and in progressive scan....I'll believe it when i see it...Redsteel 2 looks very clean and might have been developed this way.
