Wii Tops 10 Million Sold in Japan

Posted March 1, 2010 by David Radd

Enterbrain [thanks Kotaku] today revealed the full life-to-date sales in Japan of the three current generation of home consoles. Nintendo is leading the way with the Wii, having sold slightly greater than 10 million hardware units; this mark was reached in 170 weeks compared to 131 weeks for the PS2.

Second place was occupied by the PS3, with more than 4.7 million units. In a distant third place was the Xbox 360, which has managed just over 1.2 million units in Japan.

More than anything else, this article points to the rise of portable systems in Japan as the dominant format for gaming entertainment, a stark difference from last generation. So many Japanese use public transportation given the small size of the country that this makes a good deal of sense. The downside to this, however, is the Japanese development scene falling behind Western developers in the ability to create AAA titles for home consoles that would typically be thought of as "technical marvels". Games like Uncharted 2, God of War III, Alan Wake, etc. come far more frequently from Western publishers. Still have to hand it to Konami for MGS4 though.

Producer comply because they need access to Walmart which is becoming the sole retailer in a lot of towns. The easiest way to make product cheaper is by cutting salaries.
