Wii Sports Resort Quickly Sells 500,000 in U.S.

Posted August 5, 2009 by James Brightman

Nintendo of America has announced that through August 3, Wii Sports Resort has already sold 500,000 units in the U.S. The mini-game collection, which comes packed with one unit of the new Wii MotionPlus accessory, launched on July 26.

"Through Monday we sold one copy of Wii Sports Resort roughly every 1.5 seconds continuously since it launched in the United States," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "This tells us consumers were eagerly waiting to get their hands on these fun activities, and it's a great start for a game that will have long-lasting appeal."

Nintendo is selling additional MotionPlus units for $19.99 each, and we'll be very curious to see how those sales track this year. We have a feeling that the MotionPlus will be flying off the shelves similar to Wii Play, which gave consumers another Wii Remote. Wii Sports Resort has a good chance of being the best selling title of 2009 and many consumers will undoubtedly pick up extra MotionPlus units at the same time.
