Demand for the Wii might not have been the highest during 2009, but that hasn’t prevented it from setting certain sales records. An MCV report is saying that the Nintendo console has sold over six million units in the U.K. since launching three years ago, with the release of the black Wii in mid-November believed to have given the console a boost in the region.
“Wii launched in December, 2006 and sold 185,000 in just a few weeks,” said GfK-ChartTrack director Dorian Bloch. “In calendar year 2007, it sold 1.81 million – but really took off in 2008, with 2.73 million sold. So far in 2009, it’s hit 1.31 million – but it’s got a few weeks to build on that before Christmas.”
While six million in three years is very impressive, it still has a ways to go before it catches the PS2 in the U.K., which has sold over 10 million units.

Yeah, but it took the PS2 9 years to get to 10 million and is on its dying legs. I have no doubt that the Wii will overtake the PS2 eventually. Congrats to Nintendo, they have shown again that they know what people want more than so called "hardcore" games online think.
