With Wii sales not as high in 2009 as Nintendo would like, CEO Satoru Iwata said in November that his company is now on an "urgent mission" to recover the Wii's momentum. While it's not clear if that momentum has returned for the long-term, certainly this holiday season Nintendo is faring much better. The Wii was easily the best selling console in the U.S. during November, and it seems to be picking up steam in Japan too.
The most recent data from Media Create shows that for the week ended December 13, the Wii sold 135,898 units, which represents a new weekly sales record for the Wii in Japan. During the previous week, the Wii sold 106,555 units. The release of New Super Mario Bros. Wii in Japan has been fueling sales. The game sold 431,000 units for the week, bringing its Japanese sales total to date to 1.37 million units.
The hardware sales for the week stacked up as follows:
Wii: 135,898
PS3: 75,086
PSP: 71,885
DSi: 68,184
DSi LL: 58,006
DS Lite: 11,376
Xbox 360: 10,646
PSP Go: 3,077
PS2: 2,463
It was recently revealed that the Wii passed 9 million units sold in Japan, while the PS3 reached 4 million units.
