The idea of a "Wii HD" or "Wii Plus" has been circulated for many months, fueled in large part by analyst Michael Pachter. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has already flat-out denied the existence of any new Wii system and Pachter followed up with a rebuttal on IndustryGamers. Now Fils-Aime has once again denied that Nintendo is introducing an update to the Wii in the coming months, according to a BusinessWeek interview.
The Wii had a difficult second half in 2009, but Satoru Iwata recently said he thought the system had "recovered from slowdown." Fils-Aime told BusinessWeek, “We are confident the Wii home entertainment console has a very long life in front of it.” That said, there's a difference between saying no new Wii is coming and stating that the Wii will have a "long life."
While it's true that the Wii sold 3 million units in the U.S. during the holiday season, and today the company expanded its entertainment options with Netfliix on the Wii, third-party publishers appear to be pulling back. As usual, it's the first-party efforts that drive Nintendo platforms, and that's certainly been the case on Wii. Nintendo's first-party efforts will need to step up in 2010. Super Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid: Other M and (hopefully) Zelda is a good start, but more is needed - and a price cut down to $149 at some point this year would be a smart move too.

So Reggie is basically saying a new Wii system is coming but they'll continue selling the old version...
Maybe that's the real reason why all third-party publishers are abandoning ship on the current version?

Nintendo will do what's best for Nintendo - if they can continue to do the hardware and software sales they've been doing with the Wii, they probably won't be in a rush to make a new system. In fact, I think all three console makers are best served by sticking with the systems they have, so that's why we won't see any new hardware for probably a few more years.

Nintendo is going to spin the PR wheel as long as possible and until they see the PS4 and Xbox 720 or have a major sales drop off. The Wii 2 will sit on a shelf and wait for the E3 year when it's needed. And even after the announcement of a new console Nintendo will probably still try and get people to invest in a Wii saying things like "It was a groundbreaking console that pioneered motion control you can't miss that!"
