Wii Dominates Living Room Space, Xbox in the Bedroom

Posted March 23, 2011 by Ben Strauss

The latest poll from Nielsen referring to home consoles now says that of all purchased current generation consoles, over 50% of them reside in the family rooms of American homes.  Out of those three though, the Wii is the most likely to take that coveted spot.

Specifically, the Wii takes that spot in the family room at 59% of the time between the big three.  Nielsen relates to the Wii as Nintendo’s strategy for a “motion-controlled, social gaming style.”

PS3 and Xbox 360 show up 52% and 45% of the time, respectively.  The Wii has been able to beat out the multimedia push from both Sony and Microsoft for their more expensive devices.  The research firm expects a shift in the near future though, thanks to the immense success of the Kinect and, to a lesser degree, Move.

While the Xbox is in third place for the family room, it takes first place in the bedroom, says Nielsen.

Nielsen adds that kids are more likely to play the Xbox 360 as well, showing 28% in the bedroom.  Comparatively, the Wii only shows 14% while the PS3 has 16%.  "The master bedroom is home to another 10 percent of 7th Gen systems, with a number of other household locations accounting for the balance of platforms," the report cites.

I thought the wii dominated the closet. I suppose I'll take your word for it.

Haha, well that may be true for some! It's still hooked up to my TV but not used anywhere close to the level I use my PS3 and 360.

You kids are stupid. Sharing a room with your X Box. Sleeping with your X Box. Fooling around with your X Box.What do you see in that defective machine?

Got to say I agree with Blaiyan. My Wii stays in a cupboard until my nieces and nephews come to visit. Then it comes out for lots of play and then disappears again as quickly as the kids leave.

@Amristar:

Defective machine? I've never had a problem with any of the Xbox's I own. I have 2, a 360 Elite(my wife's machine) and the new 360S(mine). I have never had anything other than perfect performance out of them.

We also qualify as "hardcore" Gamers, either one or both machines are running for at least six hours per day as we play our games. Never have either of them gone in for "repairs" or even so much as "froze up" on us.

We have however, owned a couple of PS3's and we traded them in for the 360's due to overheating problems. We had them in well ventilated spots (on top of some short bookshelves near the tv), but we could only squeeze 2 hours of usage out of them before they would start overheating and lagging out. We also like Xbox Live's and the dashboard interface much better than PSN's interface, it's more "user-friendly" and better organized than Sony's version.

We aren't missing anything in performance either. Both the 360 and the PS3 have near identical tech specs and speed, so it really comes down to a choice of brand loyalty and opinion in deciding which console to get. I much prefer the 360 to the PS3.

but the 360 isn't defective. I've owned a 360 since it came out, and I have never had one fail. Period.

I have all three systems. The Wii gets played 0% of the time, the 360 gets played 99% of the time and I used the PS3 to download the Mortal Kombat demo. Sony should thank Warner Brothers for getting me to use their system again.
