Warner Bros Montreal Done with AAA Development

Posted November 9, 2010 by Ben Strauss

It's been revealed that the recently established Warner Bros Montreal studio will be working on smaller scale games meant for social and mobile audiences, rather than blockbuster AAA releases. Using such franchises as Batman and Superman, the studio is looking to shift away from big budget releases.

Speaking to a French-Candian based paper, Montreal studio head Martin Carrier mentions that, "Before, we perceived the market as a secondary market, but today is a growing market with the democratization of video games. Commercially, we believe we can sell more than games on a grand scale."

Unfortunately, it seems as though the current staff are not too thrilled about this prospect, as several developers within the studio have threatened to resign from the company. The Montreal studio is looking to gain 300 employees by 2015, with 26 currently employed.

Still though, “When it is free, the game is profitable by micro-transactions. Players can buy items within the game sooner so that they can finish the game faster.”

Besides working on downloadable titles, an unnamed MMO title has been announced. Carrier says that “it will be a lighter MMO, with a gaming experience more accessible to a younger audience.”

Warner Bros. also hopes to open up a new studio by the end of the year, this time in Quebec.
