Warner Bros. Looking to Make Mortal Kombat 9 The 'Gold Standard' for Online Play

Posted August 10, 2009 by David Radd

It's a well-known secret that the studio now called WB Games Chicago is working on Mortal Kombat 9. Now, TRMK is reporting that a job posting for a Senior Network Software Engineer at TimeWarner.com indicates that online play will be a vital part of the latest Mortal Kombat.

"WB Games Inc. seeks a Senior Software Engineer, Network to help us implement cutting-edge online features to ensure the Mortal Kombat franchise is an industry leader in online functionality. We are looking to position Mortal Kombat as the 'gold standard' for network play, and we are looking for someone who wants to push the boundaries of what is possible with online interaction," reads the job post, in part. "You will work closely with architects and designers on both the Mortal Kombat team and the advanced technology group to help design and implement functionality ranging from the core network transport layer all the way to owning the final implementation of brand-new features that will revolutionize online play."

Good online play is fast becoming a necessity in modern fighting games and a good spin on interacting with other players would really help Mortal Kombat 9 stand out.

Mortal Kombat VS DC had online play as well, although it was extremly laggy and thus poorly executed. Coupled with the fact that single-player content had absolutely nothing going for it that drew you back after you completed the two campaigns then you have a boring game.

I guess it's possible though shooters probably take up much of that space. Just have to wait and see what features they're bringing and how the mass of gamers respond to it.

I just hope to God there won't be a Mickey Mouse.

Unless you mean something else I think you confused WB with Disney.

Ah yes, thank you Blaiyan.

Still, it's a worrying thought.

The game better have an M rating, and there should be a lot of blood and violence!

I think WB should focus on the core components of the franchise first before trying to do perfect online and whatever other "add-on's" that fighters have been attaching to their games. Just from my stand point, I haven't liked a MK since #2 or 3. Since then it sort of lost me. Loved 1 and 2 though.

Just my 2 cents on it.

I have a feeling the next entry in the series will probably concentrate on the core characters and involve quite a bit of violence - that's what the team has been hinting at and what many fans seem to want, anyway.

If Mortal Kombat 9 is going to set the "gold standard" in online game play, then there is only one thing besides a solid network architecture that is neccesary. Give gamers an SDK so they can create new meshes, moves, environments, add custom soundtracks, and a VERY thorough create your own character system. The mechanics of making this game succeed shouldn't be hard. Just go back to what made MK great, but let players play online and create their own content and you will have a rock start success.
