Unreal Engine iPhone Dev Kit Coming Soon

Posted December 14, 2010 by M.H. Williams

Do you love Infinity Blade? Think it’s gorgeous? So does everyone else apparently. Luckily for consumers, Epic Games has revealed to the Wall Street Journal that the new version of the Unreal Development Kit which powered the title will be released to developers on Thursday. Like every version of the UDK, the development kit is a free download to create free titles. If developers wish to sell their games, they then have to pay a  $99 licensing fee and 25 percent of any royalties above $5,000.

“Apple’s App Store is the most vibrant market for mobile gaming,” said Epic co-founder Mark Rein. “If you’re going to make a game for a mobile device, and you want to make the most money, you’re nuts not to make it for iOS.”

Epic is also not counting out Android owners in the future. Though Rein agrees with John Carmack (via Ars Technica) and the rest of development community over concerns about device and version fragmentation, he expects Google to correct these issues over time. The Android Market also does not allow downloads over a certain size, which is a problem with Infinity Blade’s rather large download.

Android owners await these overtures with their hat in their hands.
