The Uncharted series has been on the minds of Columbia pictures for a movie adaptation for some time, and it would appear that a relatively unknown director might be on the top of the list for the job. The LA Times is reporting that David O. Russell, best known for directing the 1999 war drama Three Kings, is apparently “on the list of notables.” (They emphasized that the idea is still in the meeting stage and that there is no confirmation that a deal is imminent.)
Mr. Russell directed the 2004 comedy I Heart Huckabees, but is also known for Spanking the Monkey and Flirting with Disaster, two independent films he directed in the early '90s. Although he has two major motion releases under his belt, he has been implicated in several instances of harsh and near-violent encounters with cast and crew of both of his major films. What this could mean for Uncharted, though, is anyone’s guess until a director is signed.
Regardless of the choice for director, the LA Times article also cites that it is rather content with the new screenwriters that have been attached to the film. Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer have reportedly delivered an engaging and thoroughly enjoying screen adaptation, perhaps engaging enough to push the film into the 2011 summer season; that remains to be seen, however.
