Uncharted Developer Responds to Linear Play Mechanism

Posted November 1, 2011 by Ben Strauss

Game development walks a fine line in how to present a story while giving gamers a shot at choosing their own paths to finishing a game.  Be it a first person shooter, a grizzled RPG or even a RTS title, the push of many developers is to provide as much choice to the player as possible.  Enter Uncharted 3, a game that has been praised for such beautiful style, but lashed out against for such linearity.

Naughty Dog has responded to those comments by affirming that story line takes precedence over gameplay for the adventures of Nathan Drake.

"That's not really our genre," said creative director Amy Henning to Gametrailers. "We like those kind of games, as players and fans of other games, but for the action-adventure - especially the pulp-adventure genre - that doesn't really make sense."

“It's about having a very clear, linear story arc that doesn't allow for a lot of the dilution that is created by player choice in some cases. We always call it 'wide linear' - within the path that we give you you have a lot of choice within it, it's not just hit this button, and this button, and this button."

Regardless of how people have been commenting on the ‘problem’ of the game being linear, reviews have been absolutely stellar thus far.  Uncharted 3 is available now for PS3.
