Uncharted 2 Crowned 'Best of Show' in Game Critics Awards

Posted June 23, 2009 by James Brightman

The results are in and the Game Critics Awards have honored Naughty Dog's upcoming Uncharted 2: Among Thieves as the “Best of Show” for E3 2009. The PS3-exclusive title also garnered “Best Action/Adventure” and “Best Console Game.”

IndustryGamers is definitely looking forward to this one.

Uncharted 2 was facing some very tough competition in the Best of Show category, including Double Fine's Brutal Legend, BioWare's Mass Effect 2, Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2, and Ubisoft Montreal's Splinter Cell: Conviction. All of these nominees would appear to have a great chance of lighting up the sales charts when they hit retail, but a recent study from Broadpoint AmTech analyst Ben Schachter suggests that games winning the Best of Show award over the years have gone on to sell more than 1 million units.  Modern Warfare 2 is still very likely to outsell the other games, however. Not only is it multiplatform, but it has a much larger following than Uncharted.

The complete list of E3 winners from the Game Critics Awards is available here.

The only other game to win multiple awards was Scribblenauts, the unique DS puzzler from 5th Cell and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The title won “Best Original Game” and “Best Handheld Game.”

Interestingly, some pretty major games – such as God of War III, BioShock 2, Halo: ODST, and Splinter Cell: Conviction – won no awards.

Very much agreed with these results. Uncharted 2 was my Game of the Show as well, and was the only game (Besides New Super Mario Bros Wii) that I went back and played more than once.

I really enjoyed playing through the first one, which came out at a time when PS3 desperately needed some differentiating titles. The second one looks very sweet, but Sony needs to drop the price on the hardware already so it can sell the game to a larger installed base.

Wow. The game looked brilliant in action, and I think the multiplayer options will really open it up to new audiences, but I didn't expect a "Best of Show" from the Game Critics Awards. Good for Naughty Dog!

The production values are extremely high from what I've seen thus far. The voice acting is especially strong, just as it was in Drake's Fortune, and helps involve the player in the game.

Wow! James, you are the man!!! Lately, (that is, during the last 5 months) I feel the same frustration you expressed with the PS3 price. You are right! Enough already Sony, drop the darn price.

Now that I took care of the important stuff, let me add that I absolutely loved Uncharted and I am looking forward to the Uncharted 2. I enjoyed the character, his punch lines, and the action in the game. Hopefully the second installment will be equally good, if not better.

Seriously, Naughty Dog should run some kind of workshop where they teach everyone else how to be better coders.

Uncharted was a first gen game, with gorgeous graphics, that had no load times on a system where other developers were having to stick in mandatory installs just to get REASONABLY long load times.

If only they could make every game.
