Ubisoft Quietly Shelved Modern Day Prince of Persia

Posted September 24, 2010 by M.H. Williams

According to ex-Ubisoft art director Jonathan Jacques-Belletete, Ubisoft cancelled a modern day spinoff of its Prince of Persia franchise. CVG reports that Jacques-Belletete, who now works for Eidos as the art director on Deus Ex: Human Revolution, said he also worked on a cancelled Assassin’s Creed title for Xbox and PlayStation 2. He mentioned that development had already begun on Assassin’s Creed for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and the cel-shaded Prince of Persia title.

"After [the Assassins' Creed cancellation, Ubisoft] wanted a spin off for Prince of Persia. We had some awesome ideas with that too... in contemporary time,” he said.

"That one had already started at that point... Prince of Persia Zero,” Jacques-Belletete said in reference to PoP 2008. "But they wanted really something completely out of the left field. And back then I was known as one of the ones... 'oh this guy can get some pretty cool, weird ideas'.

"So I had this little team, and [our PoP] was actually in the contemporary world. Think a bit Day After Tomorrow, but replace the snow with sand and everything. It was really wicked. But it got cancelled, and then we did all the Far Crys."

We here at IndustryGamers find the idea of a modern-day Prince of Persia too cool to let go. Here's hoping Ubisoft resurrects the idea.
