Ubisoft Foresees 3D Future for Games

Posted December 1, 2009 by David Radd

Anyone who’s been to a movie theater in the past couple of years knows that 3D is becoming increasingly popular for film and Ubisoft Montreal has developed their upcoming Avatar game (based on the upcoming James Cameron film) using 3D technology, something that studio head Yannis Mallat thinks will turn Ubisoft into a "360-degree entertainment content provider."

"I don't want to get into the pitfall of blurring the lines between film and game," said Mallat to Financial Post. "We're trying to build capacity to tap into other entertainment experiences. The value lies on the way to get there."

Mallat foresees future games that have images as clear as HDTV programming. "That might mean [Ubisoft] releasing movies and video games at the same time," noted Mallat. "Why not?"

While most TVs aren’t capable of projecting the 3D images right now, Mallat thinks many consumers will eventually make the switch. "3D is to pictures what Dolby Stereo was to sound," ventured Mallat. "No one wants to go back to mono."
