Toys 'R' Us Taking Used Games From Atari 2600 to PS3

Posted September 10, 2009 by David Radd

While Best Buy and Wal-Mart have been dipping their toes in the waters of used gaming, Toys "R" Us today decided to jump in feet-forward. The retailer today announced that they will take trade-ins for games in their original cases with the original artwork in exchange for a gift card equal to the trade in value. While Toys "R" Us will take trade-ins for current generation consoles like the Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, DS and PSP, they will also take games from consoles like the PSOne, Game Boy and Intellivision.

"The video game trade-in program is another way we're providing customers with additional value when they visit our stores," said Bill Lee, Vice President, Divisional Merchandise Manager for Toys "R" Us U.S. "This program is designed to make the exchange process completely hassle-free for customers by accepting games from even the oldest systems, including the original Atari 2600 and [16]-bit Sega Genesis."

Considering that GameStop only accepts trade-ins for a very narrow segment of the legacy game market, this move puts Toys "R" Us in a unique position compared to most other nationwide retailers offering trade ins. Still, requiring the original boxes will likely limit the number of products traded in that are older than 10 years.

I think it's a good move also. There are alot of us who still buy old games but half of them don't come with original box and instructions or at least not at a price some are willing to pay.
