Tim Schafer: Self Censorship Is Killing The Funny

Posted February 8, 2011 by M.H. Williams

Tim Schafer, head of Double Fine, has called out self censorship as the reason that games aren’t funnier these days. Schafer has long been associated with humor from his time developing games like Monkey Island, Psychonauts, and Brutal Legend.

"There are a lot of funny people in the games industry, and [they seem to] think of the funnything, and then say: 'No, I can't do that. Let's cut that out because someone might be bothered by that.' I think if people censored themselves less there'd be a lot more funny stuff out there,” said Schafer to CVG.

Double Fine’s next game, Stacking, is coming to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this week. The unique little puzzle game is based around possession in a world populated by matryoshka nesting dolls. Yes, it’s as weird as it sounds.
