THQ Signs 8-Year WWE License Agreement, Gets Slammed in Settlement

Posted December 23, 2009 by David Radd

THQ and the WWE today announced that they have signed a new licensing deal lasting eight years. THQ will have the exclusive rights to create and publish games based upon WWE content “across all major gaming platforms and distribution channels.”

“This agreement ensures that WWE games will continue to be an important cornerstone of THQ’s annual release schedule for the long term,” said THQ President and CEO Brian Farrell. “We look forward to working directly with WWE to expand their brand in the video game space through continued game play innovation and increased online delivery of WWE content.”

Additionally, THQ, Jakks Pafific and the WWE have settled the dispute relating to WWE video game and toy licenses. All claims will be dropped, but THQ will pay Jakks $20 million over the next four years and the WWE $13.2 million; all stake Jakks had in the WWE license will cease at the end of 2009.

“This year’s highly rated WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 video game demonstrates the innovation and creativity that THQ brings to WWE,” said WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon. “This new licensing agreement will ensure that we continue our tremendous success in the video game industry in the years to come.”

I don't know if they should've went so hard for this. SVR 2009 was like the first smackdown (at least on playstation) to not sell over a million copies. Maybe now that they're on a bunch of platforms it doesn't matter to them. They really should step up the graphics and add some new animations. The games are starting to look stale. Also take a few steps back to maybe the first SVR control scheme.

Also stop trying to split the games making a new useless franchise. Those legends should've been in SVR 2009. Plus the DLC was wack and few and far between. Not sure if i'll even get 2010 let alone looking forward to 2011.
