THQ Picks up Midway's TNA Developers

Posted August 10, 2009 by David Radd

At the time of the Midway buyout by Warner Bros., external studio Midway Newcastle was shut down and Midway Seattle was confirmed to be working on This is Vegas, but the status of Midway San Diego was left hanging in the air. Gamasutra today uncovered SEC filings indicating that the Californian studio has been sold to THQ.

The filings indicate that THQ purchased the developers of the TNA wrestling titles for $200,000 in addition to certain liabilities and payments for remaining staff. Fewer than half of the studio's employees are expected to be retained.

THQ will not retain the license to make TNA games nor will it allow them to make use of the Unreal Engine 3 or other third-party tools that were in use at the studio. Some or all of Midway San Diego's proprietary game engine may be retained for future use, however.

Additionally, Midway's French and German publishing divisions have been bought out by their regional managers.

Yeah right now the fate of future TNA games is definitely in question.
