THQ: 3DS Fixes Nintendo's Piracy Issues

Nintendo has already gone on record saying that the 3DS will include their new solution in the fight against piracy. Now THQ’s Executive VP of Global Publishing, Ian Curran, says that Nintendo is on the right track with the 3DS. Curran spoke to CVG about THQ’s previous issues with producing games for Nintendo’s portable line due to piracy.

"The problem with the DS market in the last few years, particularly with the DS Lite, is that it's just been attacked by piracy,” said Curran. “It's made it almost impossible to shift any significant volume. The DSi combated it a little bit, but the 3DS has taken that a step further."

"What excites me even more [than 3DS games] is that there's technology built in that device to really combat piracy,” he explained.

"I actually asked Nintendo to explain the technology and they said it's very difficult to do so because it's so sophisticated," he added. "They combated the piracy on DSi, which they don't believe is cracked yet - but they know they've been hurt across the world and they believe the 3DS has got technology that can stop that.

"Therefore the opportunity for people to invest more in product development [on the system] and bring more 3DS products to market comes out of that. It's going to probably cost us more to do it all in 3D - so we want to make sure we get a return on our investment when we do it."

The piracy issues on portable platforms have been a big issue for hardware and software vendors, with a recent study pegging losses at almost $41 billion.

Piracy issues? I didn't know that was going on. How do people manage to pirate those little game cards?

I'm not going to link or post any specific things because I don't want to encourage piracy in any way, but in response to your second question, I'll just say "With extreme ease"

Anyway, I'll bet the new piracy solution has something to do with its wireless connection; being "always on" might let it check for the legitimacy of software.

There will always be away around any form of anti-piracy. The piracy statistics at $41 billion is blown out of proportion, what a lot of statistics do is go on piracy sites and record how many people have downloaded the game and then x with the cost of the game. Thing is, most people will pirate something they wouldn't have bought anyways just for their collection or just because its free, top rated games is a different story. Not that I can relate to any of this..... rolls eyes.... I end up buying good games tho and won't waste money till I've play tested it first.
