It's been more than 25 years and Tetris is still going strong. It's one of those games that just about everybody has played at one time or another, even by so called "non-gamers." The rise of mobile phone gaming has been perhaps the greatest development for Alexey Pajitnov's puzzle franchise. The EA Mobile distributed title has seen more than 100 million paid downloads, the AP reported today. EA Mobile and licensor Blue Planet Software will be formally announcing the Tetris milestone on Thursday in Montreal.
Adam Sussman, EA Mobile's vice president of worldwide publishing, told the AP that the milestone marked "a huge moment not just for EA but for mobile gaming in general. It speaks to the evergreen appeal of Tetris." Tetris is currently available in 60 countries on about 64,000 different handsets; roughly 20 percent of those are smartphones.
During last year's E3, IndustryGamers had the pleasure of meeting with Pajitnov to talk about the game's 25th anniversary. He said at the time, “I realized that it was a good game, but I never imagined that it would get this big.”
In addition to providing a great way to pass some time, Tetris may have the added benefit of leading to a "more efficient brain," if you believe the research.
