Supreme Court Decision Causes Similar Bill To Be Tabled

Posted June 30, 2011 by M.H. Williams

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court struck down the violent game law drafted by California State Senator Leland Yee.  In response, Utah Representaive Michael Morley told the Deseret News that he has backed off of a similar bill of his own creation.

Morley’s bill allowed parents to sue businesses that sold violent video games to minors, despite advertising to the contrary.  Former governor Jon Huntsman Jr. vetoed the bill in 2009, with support for Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff.   Both men worried that the possible law could affect small businesses and freedom of speech.

Morley defended the intent of his bill, but he will not pursue it in the future, stating “It's not on my radar to fight that fight.”
