MTV Games sent word today that a special recording of the performance The Who plans to play during the Bridgestone Super Bowl XLIV Halftime Show will be made available right after the game for Rock Band players to purchase and play. “The Who Super Bowl S-mashup” will sell for $1.99 (160 Microsoft Points) on Xbox Live. It'll be immediately available for the Wii console as well, but it's "coming soon" for PS3.
The Who recorded a special version of the performance in advance of the Super Bowl specifically for Rock Band. MTV and Harmonix have always had a great relationship with the legendary band, as The Who is already heavily featured in the Rock Band music store. There are 15 previously released tracks from The Who available in the Rock Band music library. The Who also performed at an exclusive Rock Band party at E3 a couple years ago, which this editor had the privilege of attending.
Rock Band continues to grow with the launch of the Rock Band Network, which could potentially democratize music in the video game space. Although music game sales were way down last year, Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos insists that the genre has not peaked.
