STALKER Developer Reportedly Shuts Down

Posted December 9, 2011 by Ben Strauss

The STALKER series might have suffered a permanent shutdown, now that reports are coming in that Ukrainian-based developer GSC Game World is shutting down.  Publisher 1C Ukraine has acknowledged the unfortunate news.

The STALKER series, already four games in, has been popular with the PC gaming crowd thanks in part to a radical open world system that has driven a lively modding crowd.  The studio was already working on the fifth title in the series, a full-on sequel to the original.

Unfortunately, GSC’s original denial of the report on Twitter has since disappeared.  It has also been confirmed that several employees are currently looking for new opportunities.  Rock, Paper, Shotgun was also given a “no comment” after looking into the report.

1C Ukraine, publisher of the original STALKER title has separately confirmed the closure, saying that the studio was closed at the behest of Sergei Grigorovich, CEO and founder of GSC Game World.

STALKER has already passed 4 million units sold across the original STALKER, Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat.
