Square Enix Sales Up 33% on Dragon Quest, Batman

Square Enix today posted its results for the six-month fiscal period ended September 30.  The Japanese publisher reported revenues of 90.6 billion yen, up a third over the 68 billion yen from the same period last year.

Despite increased sales, income was down over 55 percent to 2.68 billion yen from 6.05 billion yen.  Square Enix is going through major restructuring efforts right now, with layoffs and retirements expected to affect 10 percent of the company's workers.

The gaming division saw sales rise over 100 percent to 48.4 billion yen during the half year period, with income of 10.4 billion yen.  Dragon Quest IX sold more than any other game during the early part of the year, posting 3.93 million in sales, with Batman: Arkham Asylum (which, of course, is part of the portfolio thanks to the Eidos acquisition) also managing 2.63 million units sold and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 managing 1.22 million in sales.  Roughly three-quarters of the company's sales came from Japan, with American and European sales making up 12 and 14 percent, respectively.

Square Enix is expecting profits for the full year to be up nearly 60 percent to 10 billion yen for the full year.
