News from this week’s Famitsu has some surprising information from Square Enix. While the company prepares to launch several titles on handheld systems in the coming months, the Japanese RPG powerhouse could make a big splash with one title in particular for PlayStation Vita. The publisher is reportedly looking at the possibility of doing a straight port of Final Fantasy XI to Vita, thereby bringing a rather large MMO to handhelds.
Speaking with Final Fantasy XI producer Hiromichi Tanaka, Famitsu was able to confirm only a cursory inquiry into the project. The firm has no concrete plans to do anything at this time.
Regardless, the move to bring a major MMO to a handheld shows how confident the publisher is in the online and technical capabilities of Sony's new handheld. Nintendo might be in for a tougher competition this handheld generation, if Square’s projects are any indication of what we can expect from the Vita.
