Square Enix Creates 'Extreme Edge' Label for Mature Games

Posted April 27, 2010 by James Brightman

Square Enix continues to take a more global approach, placing further emphasis on Western titles. The acquisition of Eidos has certainly helped with this effort. Now, for Western titles that Square Enix publishes in Japan that have "extreme" qualities, the company has decided to attach a new label to these products: "Square Enix Extreme Edge" [thanks Andriasang].

Violent/mature foreign games rated between CERO's D and Z (Z is for adults-only 18+ games like Grand Theft Auto) like Modern Warfare 2 and Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days would fall into this category.

Interestingly, Square Enix also intends to deliver simultaneous Japanese releases for its Eidos titles going forward. Square Enix has yet to actually publish a CERO Z game. Given the violence in Kane & Lynch, perhaps the sequel will be the first from Square Enix to get the Z rating. It ships in Japan on August 26.

So I guess Square Enix decided that with all the free press Rapelay has gotten over the past two years they might as well make a new game in the series and they are using this label to publish it. Of course thats just a theory.
