Splinter Cell: Conviction Promotion Gets Police Response

Posted April 19, 2010 by David Radd

Marketers are always trying to push the envelope in the gaming sphere, but one recent stunt in New Zealand may have gone too far. As part of a promotion for Ubisoft's Splinter Cell: Conviction, an actor brandished a replica pistol outside of the Degree bar in Auckland.

"This guy with bandages on his hands pointed a gun at customers sitting outside,” said Degree manager Steph Kurtovich reports the New Zealand Herald [thanks Kotaku]. ”They were pretty terrified."

The police were called, but fortunately no one was hurt in the incident. For their part, game marketers Monaco Corporation said they hired out another company to organize the event and weren't told about the gun prop.

"This was by no means an attempt to get cops down there and get this sort of exposure. We do apologize, we shouldn't have had guns down there," said Duane Mutu, Monaco's marketing manager. "It was just marketing gone wrong."
