Sony's 'Top Retailers' Reporting 300% PS3 Sales Increase

Posted September 10, 2009 by James Brightman

Recent reports out of the U.K. and Japan indicate that PS3 sales have picked up nicely overseas since Sony decided to drop the price on the hardware. Today, Sony Computer Entertainment America sent word that its "top retailers have reported a 300% lift in PS3 hardware sales and an increase of 140% in total hardware revenue across the PlayStation portfolio when comparing the first week of September to the week before the $299 price adjustment."

The company said that it will continue to focus on its new  “It Only Does Everything” marketing campaign (see interview with Peter Dille here), which will "drive consumer education and awareness to the expansive PS3 benefits and features throughout the holiday season."

Sony also cited an OTX survey, which noted that of the launches that gamers want to buy most, 5 of the top 10 titles were on the PS3, including God of War III, Final Fantasy XIII, Gran Turismo 5, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 -- that last one, of course, is not exclusive to PS3. Nevertheless, with SCEA is very bullish about PS3's future, starting this October with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time. "With more than 25 exclusive titles slated through the holiday and into early next year, these games are just the tip of the iceberg," said Sony. "No other entertainment device is better positioned for this holiday."

Actually Final Fantasy XIII isn't exclusive to PS3 either. It's also pretty much guaranteed that Modern Warfare 2 will sell much better on the 360 than PS3 so I'm not even sure why Sony brought that title up.

Having said that, FFXIII may be the first title of this current gen that launches simultaneously on the 360 and PS3 and actually sells better on the PS3. That remains to be seen of course, especially since every other day and date release title sells the most copies on 360.

Right, yeah I probably should have mentioned that. FFXIII is exclusive to PS3 in Japan only, but whenever it arrives in North America it'll be on 360 at the same time.

THE 1 2 P, I agree. MW2 is likely to sell more on 360 and FFXIII could be a better performer on PS3.

It didn't say exclusives. Sony quoted OTX which suggest that 5 of the "top ten" titles were on Ps3. So bringing up CodMW2 in that context would make sense I guess.

Also FFXIII probably won't be the first game to sell best on PS3 with a simultaneous release. Notes Arkham Asylum.
