Sony has revealed that it will not be releasing the PlayStation Vita in North America or Europe this year. Sony Executive VP Kaz Hirai said the Vita would go on sale in Japan this year and then drop in Western markets in early 2012. Hirai pointed to providing gamers with a solid launch lineup as the reason for the delay. Kaz also shot down the idea that the Vita would experience a pre-release price cut due to Nintendo’s slashing of the 3DS’s MSRP.
"We packed so much into the device and made it very affordable," Hirai told reporters. "There is no need to lower the price just because somebody else that happens to be in the video game business decided that they were going to lower their price."
Can Sony compete with mounting competition outside the traditional gaming industry, a rival with a new lower price point and upcoming tentpole titles, and the complete miss of the holiday shopping season in Western markets? Or is Vita the 'PSP Go Too'?
