Today’s gaming landscape is well grounded in 2D, but while we might have all grown up on two dimensions, the current trend in gaming is going 3D. With Nintendo selling the 3DS, Sony pushing 3D in their PS3 and Microsoft hinting at a 3D interface for the 360 down the road, we’ve all but forgotten the grandfather of extra-dimensional gaming. Virtual Reality was something of an ill-fated experiment from the start, but many gamers can remember the days of arcades promoting various gaming titles grounded in ‘virtual reality.’
It seems that Sony is looking to revive those days, as they’ve confirmed some tinkering in the R&D department. Sony London Studios chief Mick Hocking stated that the company could have some surprises in store. "We're working with a couple of games at Sony that are experimenting with virtual reality-type experiences."
“We've also got a new head mounted display that we showed at CES, that can produce really great quality 3D and a very immersive experience for games. The head-mounted display has twin-OLED screens; very high quality.”
"At the moment it’s just a head-mounted display; the head isn’t being tracked – but that’s something we’re doing R&D on,” he added. “I have to say, what we’ve done in the R&D projects has just been fantastic.”
