As Sony gears up to a 3D extravaganza on the PS3 with Killzone 3, Gran Turismo 5 and a myriad of other big name titles, Sony’s Kaz Hirai believes that handheld glasses-free 3D technology is currently lacking.
In an interview with Japanese based Sankei Biz at E3 (courtesy of Andriasang), Hirai spoke of the imprecise nature of the naked-eye technology displayed. “Based off internally conducted research, naked-eye 3D for portables does not have high precision, and at present there are limitations."
Though he did not specifically mention the new Nintendo 3DS, David Reeves, former CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe believes that the PSPgo is not up to par with Nintendo offerings to begin with. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata did however discuss limitations present within the glasses-free technology in an interview with VentureBeat. The new technology displayed on the 3DS is unsuitable for use with big screen TVs, he noted.
“With this parallax barrier technology, the LCD must be a certain distance away from the screen. It also needs a certain viewing angle. We think it is not a great match for the home TV set. As one of the engineers, I can anticipate that someone will invent a 3D TV that does not require you to wear 3D glasses. As far as today is concerned I do not think they can do it well. We need an invention to make it happen. If you ask me when, I have no idea,” Iwata said.
With plans for a 3D capable Wii successor possibly on the drawing board, the idea of glasses-free 3D could be a reality in the near future.

As I have always said about Sony they dog then copy! If they are dogging something they will soon copy it! This is great! I can't wait to see what the PSP3d will be (yes I read the article they WILL have 3D in the next PSP!!!) Of course there are limitations! Heck there are limitations on everything including systems, the PS3, the xbox360, heck even a supper computer. They are just setting it up so they can say see! We have gotten reed of the limitations OURS is better! Sony ALWAYS dogs out what they are about to copy!
