Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide president Shuhei Yoshida voiced his support for smaller development teams in the independent sector, saying that they are the gateway to new opportunities and industry growth.
"We have to support those smaller teams," said Yoshida to Develop. "Without doing so, the whole industry will stall, in terms of innovation.”
Innovation from smaller developers has been growing in the past few years, as many believe that this is a golden time in indie development. With Sony moving towards new gaming features to compete against Nintendo and Microsoft, the smaller firms might be able to bring in a fresh perspective. This could certainly be seen with the Vita, and Sony’s push towards AR gaming.
Yoshida made sure to note that the Vita is just what smaller developers should be looking for, with development and affordability kept close to Sony’s design specifications. The Vita is "small and light and easy for developers to handle," he said.
